The Power of Two Roots

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) and turmeric (Curcuma longa) are two of the most studied medicinal plants in the world. Both are rhizomes — underground root-like stems — that have been central to Asian herbal traditions for millennia. Together, they form one of the most potent, accessible, and delicious natural remedies you can make at home.

This golden tea — sometimes called "golden milk" in a milk-based version, or a "healing tonic" when made as a water-based brew — is a staple of Ayurvedic, Indonesian (jamu), and traditional Chinese medicine.

Why Ginger?

Ginger's active compounds — primarily gingerols and shogaols — are responsible for its sharp, warming flavour and its medicinal properties. Research supports ginger's role in:

  • Reducing nausea: One of the most well-evidenced natural remedies for nausea, including morning sickness and motion sickness.
  • Anti-inflammatory effects: Gingerols inhibit inflammatory pathways similar to some conventional anti-inflammatory compounds.
  • Digestive support: Stimulates digestive enzymes and may reduce bloating and discomfort.
  • Immune support: Antimicrobial properties may help the body fight infections.

Why Turmeric?

Turmeric's golden colour comes from curcumin, its primary bioactive compound. Curcumin is one of the most extensively researched natural anti-inflammatories. Key benefits supported by research include:

  • Powerful antioxidant activity — neutralising free radicals and boosting the body's own antioxidant enzymes
  • Anti-inflammatory: Curcumin has been shown to inhibit molecules involved in inflammation at the molecular level
  • Joint support: Some studies suggest benefit for arthritis-related pain and stiffness
  • Digestive health: Traditional use in treating indigestion is supported by some modern evidence

Important note on absorption: Curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own. Pairing turmeric with black pepper (which contains piperine) increases curcumin absorption dramatically. A small pinch of black pepper in your tea makes a big difference.

Classic Ginger-Turmeric Tea Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 2)

  • 2 cups (500 ml) water
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced (or ½ tsp dried ginger powder)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh turmeric, peeled and sliced (or ¼ tsp turmeric powder)
  • A small pinch of black pepper
  • ½ cinnamon stick (optional, but adds warmth and flavour)
  • Squeeze of lemon or lime
  • Raw honey or stevia, to taste

Method

  1. Add water, ginger, turmeric, black pepper, and cinnamon (if using) to a small saucepan.
  2. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and allow to steep for an additional 5 minutes.
  4. Strain into cups through a fine mesh strainer.
  5. Add a squeeze of lemon and sweeten with honey or stevia to taste.
  6. Serve warm. This tea can also be refrigerated and enjoyed cold.

When to Drink It

This tea is flexible enough to enjoy at various times:

  • Morning: On an empty stomach to kickstart digestion and metabolism
  • After meals: To support digestion and reduce post-meal bloating
  • When feeling under the weather: At the first signs of a cold or flu
  • Evening: The warming, anti-inflammatory properties make it a soothing pre-bed ritual

Variations

  • Golden Milk: Replace water with warm coconut milk or oat milk for a creamy, latte-style drink.
  • Add moringa: Stir in ½ teaspoon moringa powder after straining for an extra nutritional boost.
  • Add lemongrass: Include a stalk of bruised lemongrass during simmering for a Southeast Asian herbal flavour.

Safety and Considerations

Ginger and turmeric are safe for most people in culinary and moderate therapeutic amounts. However:

  • High doses of turmeric supplements may interact with blood-thinning medications — consult your doctor.
  • Ginger in large amounts may not be suitable in some pregnancy contexts beyond the first trimester — speak to your midwife or doctor.
  • Turmeric can stain clothing and surfaces — handle with care.

As a daily herbal tea in normal amounts, this golden brew is one of the safest and most enjoyable natural remedies available to you.
